Project Overview
Stabilizing Critical Infrastructure Over a Major Waterway
Whitson Construction was engaged to stabilize and repair a critical 36″ self-supporting pipe spanning a major waterway.
The structural capacity of the existing bridge was unknown, requiring a full scaffolding system approximately 750′ long and 70′ high to provide access, temporary support, and enable a detailed condition assessment.
Once the bridge’s condition was fully assessed, Whitson Construction proceeded to reinforce the bridge piers, demolish the existing pipe bridge, and install a new support truss along with a steel pipe over the 350m span.
This project exemplifies Whitson’s ability to engineer creative solutions when conventional construction methods simply aren’t possible — turning a highly constrained environment into a successful outcome.
Ways to Help
Make a Difference
CHALLENGE 01
Access Restrictions
CHALLENGE 02
Temporary Infrastructure
A temporary control gate and scaffolding system were designed and built to accommodate full project operations safely while maintaining the integrity of ongoing utility services.
CHALLENGE 03
Heavy Lifts with Constraints
Over 140 tons of steel and pipe were installed using two custom-designed moving gantries, with mid-project innovations allowing a tandem lift of 20,000 kg.
CHALLENGE 04
Pier Reinforcement
Each pier was reinforced using aerial rope access techniques, eliminating the need for cranes or other large machinery and enabling precision work in a confined environment.
